Sorry but I just don't know the answer.... I 'furtled' abit and was maybe too vigorous... but after yesterdays excitement of seeing our first potato I decided to see what was lurking below the plant. (See pic)

Now I don't know how many potatoes I should expect to find... this is what was there. There were a few 'showings' of possibly more growth on some shoots.

Variety is Pentland Javelin.

If you didn't disturb the 'potential' potatoes and their roots too much, you could try carefully putting them back in the bucket and water well and leave a few more weeks. You have nothing to lose by giving it a try anyway.

If you earthed up your potatoes, dig by hand low down the mound, you can remove any sizeable tubers and cover up the rest to grow on, take only what you need and then lift the full crop at a later stage, the longer you leave them in the ground the more each plant will produce but pest damage also increases, I would be looking for about 8 reasonable tubers or a" boiling " as the older growers call it, from each plant, at the first sign of leaves dying of I would start to lift the crop, only leaving them in if the first few lifts were disapointing.

The yield depends a bit on the variety. It also depends on how much you want the sweet taste of new potatoes! If you're happy about it, go for it. If you want a bigger boiling, leave them a couple of weeks.

Thanks peeps... I didn't dig up any more plants - just the one! And I also reburied it after I took its fruits well you never know!! Wishfully thinking it may produce some more.

I will leave the rest alone for a few more weeks then just do one plant at a time...

... this growing lark is more exciting than I ever expected! No wonder my Grandad used to talk about it all the time
