Best way to plant vegetables in a meter square raised bed?

Hi everyone,

Okay so this is my first proper attempt at this, and I really want it to go well.
Here they are. They are roughly 1.2 metre square



The soil is something akin to a fine loam, it's flattened, and my vegetables are ready to go in. It's south facing.

I'm most concerned about my brassicas right now, and was wondering what the best way to plant them is.

I'm thinking of a chard at the back, followed by Giant Red Mustard, beetroot and cabbage, with maybe some onions in the front.

However I really can't decide how to do my rows, and how far apart to space them.

I've been toying with the idea of double rows or wide rows, rather than single rows. I think double rows are probably my preference.

Can anybody please offer any advice on how to do this, or whether it is best?

I had no idea that my raised beds were the perfect size for square foot gardening

When dividing into the 4 x 4 squares, I take it you need to use something like wood to separate it.

Is this simply for separating the grids, or must the wood travel a certain distance into the soil, to keep the roots separate?

Just peg it out with string - its only a planting guide for your squares.

Bigmallly- I'm unsure what you mean 3,4 " apart etc. How does this translate in terms of plant per foot? I know there is some really simple maths behind that question, but I can't quite fathom it.

Also, I read online that chard is 4 per foot, but I thought it seemed excessive considering how big they grow. You reckon it's definitely 1 per foot? If so, I agree. That was my original intention anyway.

I kind of imagine giant mustard would be the same. You think 1 per foot is a better estimate?

Bigmallly- I'm unsure what you mean 3,4 " apart etc.

Spacings between plants so if you are doing 4" spacings, your first plant would be 2" from the corner then the next would be 6" then 10" leaving a 2" gap at the opposite corner.
