  • Any Ideas?

    Hey guys

Ive got a few pots that have been out in the open for a while they have compost in and a flower but there is this thing that seems to be growing on the compost.

Its in the shape of a splash with what looks like suction cups on, anyone know what this could be?

    Thanks guys
    Jen

Are you sure it's not part of the flower?............

I'm guessing that's its some kind of lichen/fungus, maybe the compost is/has been too wet?
                Just pick it off...............

Spot on VC I get it on some of my pots occasionally, just clear it off, sooner the better or you end up with something like this.

Actually it's a liverwort a kind of primitive plant that likes damp locations which it needs to grow. The little cups are part of the reproductive apparatus and rely on rain splashes to work for fertilisation and spreading of the gemmae

Could it by the first part of the reproductive cycle of a fern. They produce a flat plate, before the frond part.

As snakeshack says its a liverwort. I get loads of it - particularly likes shady places. You can pretty much prevent it by mulching the top of your pots with something - I use cocoashell but any organic mulch would do the job.
