  • Morrison's buckets, tomatoes, support..

Hi all, after a little more advice.

Does anyone grow their tomatoes in Morrison flower buckets??

I have 12 tomato plants potted up and in my sun trap next to the greenhouse, hopefully to avoid hard skins, which is I believe caused by the ridiculous high temp that I cant get down in the greenhouse..anyway,,

My question is, will normal canes down to the bottom of the bucket be enough to support the plant, does anyone grow tomatoes like this, would i need to 'rig something up' a little more sturdy?

    Thanks.

All my cordons are grown in the larger of the Morrison's buckets and all though mine are in the GH I still have to provide extra support to the canes otherwise they fall over with the weight.

One thought occurs if you are growing in buckets placed over earth you could drill an extra hole in the bottom of the bucket and push the cane through that hole into the ground.

all mine in gh in the big flower buckets. With a 6ft cane in each bucket.

I have started tying up a load of branches, as they are getting huge!

But this is how I grew tomatoes last year and they were fine...

        Hi new to the vine

However at 99p for about twelve 10inch pots it is really good value and yes i grew my toms last year n them just drilled drainage holes in and used a few canes to tie and secure great harvest.

Got a good stock of th epots jst in case morrisons take advantage of us VFM gardeners

        Happy gardening

I use Morrisons flower buckets for my tomatoes. I use a single cane in each pot but then line the pots up and put a couple of crosspieces in too .

Great, thanks for the replies, I'm on concrete Potty!
I will start with single canes, see how it goes, but i did envisage ending up with something similar to what you have greenishfing!

It's my first year with Morrison's buckets, they seem like an amazing bargain! hopefully they will stay solid for a few years.

If you leave them out in the sun they tend to go brittle after a couple of years but at that price who cares.

Ask next time you go in. Some stores give them away & some sell them 8 for £1 or thereabouts.

Look for them, stacked together, near the cutflower counter, sometimes underneath a stand, carefully hidden

Just a thought Cpt. If you can secure 1 cane to each end pot only (12 foot apart) with horizontal canes 6ft high between the 2 canes. It may then be possible to run strings from the horizontal cane into each pot, then wind your toms round the strings

I have been using them for some years now and only had the odd couple split near the rim. These I cut down to about 6 inches deep and use them for radish. 30 odd radish in each pot, one pot sown every three weeks gives a constant supply of fresh crisp radish and you save on compost.

That's just what I do. Only I join my canes up at the top. I get flower buckets from our local co-op Free!!! In fact every time I go in, there is a pile there waiting for me. I don't want them but cant bring myself to turn down a freebee! This year I have used bigger buckets for my toms but the flower buckets are handy for other stuff. Still trying to think of uses for the other 50, maybe witches hats for Halloween?

Mine are grown in those [except I managed to get Asda freebies while they were still doing them ] and I'm voting for the crosspiece too. The plants tend to slip down the canes under their weight if you just tie them to one upright...
