Black tomatoes
We haven't grown them before either, but we had some seed for Black Russian from some friends which also have some good fruit already swelling on them, and I am also growing one called Indigo Rose which is reputed to be a really purple tomato. That is growing well but hasn't set fruit yet.
People say these dark tomatoes also have a good taste and more betacarotene than red ones. The dark colour is probably a bit off-putting for some people but everyone who has grown them says they are really good.
Good luck with your crop!

I have just ordered 2 x grafted black toms from a postage only (£1.99) offer at suttons, 0844 922 0606, they are a lot darker than my usual black Russian so I hope they are not too long in arriving, we have to make room for them, somewhere, but we will sort that out when they get here,....you must quote order code ADB14, they will ask you the six figure code in sats daily mirror but we couldn't find it and the person in the call centre found it for us, valid until 30th of the month. looking at their site the toms are usually £9.99 for three so its worth a go......I found that 6 figure code, its 244955 , okay...Last edited by BUFFS; 24-05-2014, 04:40 PM.

I'm experimenting with Chocolate Cherry for the first time this year, which looks purple rather than black on the seed packet. Only got as far as flwoer buds forming so far.A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy

I grew Indigo Rose last year - only problem is that they seemed to need direct sunlight to make them go completely dark so I had to keep turning the pot round. I had a few unripe ones stored later in the year and without the sun they only went red (but they were still tasty).
I grew both black cherry and chocolate cherry last year; they seem to be identical in taste and looks (but again v. nice). Of all the darker ones, consensus was that brown berry and bombonera were the best tasting.

I usually grow balck ones now, or green or orange ones, just because IMO, they taste so much better.
Black Trifele is a particular favourite, as well as Brads Black Heart. I do like Black Cherry and Black russian but they have a tendency to split so don't worry if it happens to you, it's normal.

Black Russian nearly ready for harvest, and yes a slightly smoky flavour but very nice. To give you a better idea I have a 9" span.Attached FilesLast edited by Potstubsdustbins; 27-05-2014, 02:44 PM.Potty by name Potty by nature.
