Garlic looking rough

My garlic seems to be going yellow, this picture shows it on the right next to onions which are much greener and have had exactly the same treatment. I have other garlic and its all going yellow. I have had a furtle and there doesn't seem to be any bulbs forming. It was planted last November. Does it need feeding? its the first time I have grown garlic so I just don't know.

Now is the time all bulbs put on their fat if you like. Yours may well need feeding if they are in containers, the food in compost only lasts so long and a lot of that gets washed away. I always add some slow release blood fish and bone and a quick release such as growmore to liven them up and give them a good boost.

Bill, I think the mild winter as put paid's to garlic this year, mine are exactly the same! and I did plant em like your good self, November last year, with a good balanced fertiliser!



Had a "Rummage" too, no bulbing either!

Hey! Too late now! They either do or they don't!

But as PW said, now is just about the time they put on a bit of meat! Here's hoping!

It would seem a lot of peoples garlic is not doing too well, for whatever reason (including mine)....

I suspect the mild and very wet winter could be partly to blame....

I wouldn't worry about the lack of bulbing yet. I'm sure they don't put most of their swelling on until the last minute, so they could still do ok.

I agree with Shady'; I don't think it's anywhere near too late yet anyway. We have had some pretty strange growing conditions this year which might make them "old" but I think if you feed them, they will make the most of the feed by putting up new growth and using it to produce bulbs. I would though, monitor them carefully to check they are not running to flower, even if they do start, you can harvest them quickly and freeze what you can rather than relying on drying.

In the interests of completeness, I have checked my garlic, which looks absolutely brilliant:great big, strong healthy plants and the bulbs are only 1.5 inches or so across. I'll be feeding them like mad now and won't be expecting to harvest for at least another 6 weeks or so. Check out Growing Garlic | How To Grow | Grow Your Own on this site so it must be true! Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining that they haven't bulbed up yet, its the fact they are going yellow that is the disturbing thing. It is a truly wonderful thing to be able to access so many accomplished gardeners for advice.

Sweet of you. I don't consider myself accomplished just been through the "yellow garlic syndrome" and applied the yellow stuff liberally to cure it - with success.

Also, I went back to your original post and TBH your onions look very green, I don't think garlic ever gets that green for me anyway.

It is not the best of pictures, the garlic is more yellow that it appears, but I have given them some Tomorite and its out of my hands now.
