Hi, I've only ever grown Tumbling Toms in baskets before, but now that we've moved somewhere with a lot more land I'm having a go at growing outdoors in a sunny, sheltered spot. I have about a dozen Roma plum tomatoes to plant out as well as half a dozen Sweet Aperitif cherry tomatoes. I've searched the net for pics and info on supporting tomatoes, but am now quite confused. We live in France and everyone here uses those spiral things, but I'm not sure about them. What do others do that isn't too complicated to set up? Is just tying them to bamboo canes OK, or are they too weak on their own?

If you are growing them outdoors they need some kind of protection from direct rain. Have a look in other peoples gardens and see what they do, and the spiral things do work.Gardening requires a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration. Lou Erickson, critic and poet

I've only ever used canes for my outdoor ones (sometimes multiple ones) but usually use string tied to the horizontal bars in the polytunnel. The cages all look a bit too complicated for me.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Thanks all, maybe I will try the spiral things then, as they are quite cheap here and can be reused every year. I don't think I've seen anyone here using anything other than these for tomatoes - I find the French tend to be quite unimaginative about stuff and just all do the same!
