  • Newbie looking for advice

    Hello everyone!

After being on a waiting list for 5 years! I have eventually been given a half plot allotment. It needs lots of work (over run with weeds) but it's a great spot and I'm happy!

From what I can make out, there is about 5 raised beds on the plot. What vegetables would you advise for a beginner to get started with?

    Welcome to the vine urbanturfer.

Plant what you like to eat

Its getting a bit late for some things, like peppers and tomatoes, unless you buy plants from the garden centre, but things like salads, carrots, cabbages, broccoli peas and beans should be fine. You might even find some potatoes (our garden centre still has some) - they are great for breaking up neglected ground.

Welcome, what you grow depends on what equipment you have, is there a green house? do you have somewhere to start seeds off at home a south facing window perhaps? What experience do you have or are you a complete novice? can we have some pictures of your plot?

Hi, my advice would be to start growing some seeds today in pots. Clear the 5 raised beds, one at a time and then tackle the rest of the plot later. I'd probably loosen the soil in the beds and add mulch and compost on top. Get a compost heap going for all the annual weeds and a drowning bucket for any perennials. As you clear the beds plant them up with either potatoes, shop bought seedlings or you own seedlings once they have been hardened off. Try not to leave the soil bare for too long. Well done for waiting 5 years, you must be very patient. If you decide you don't like the raised beds you can change them in the winter, but they will make it easier to start off in the short term. Glad you have one at last, good luck.

Thanks everyone! lots of great advice, much appreciated!

Bill, there is no greenhouse, but there is a shed! As you can see from the picture there is some initial work to rid the weeds, but on closer inspection yesterday there are a few things growing in all that still. Noticed carrots and potatoes - would I keep them or start from scratch do you think?

BTW I'm a total novice - but a keen learner!

I know you have a lot on but if you get chance, dead head those dandelions before they go to seed or they will be all over.

Might be worth keeping the potatoes, have a look and see whart the carrots are up to,if from last year, may be no good, but have a look, either way you're gonna have to pull them up.

Good luck with your plot, looks lovely.
