Knowing your enemy puts you half way to conquering it,.
Is your rabbit proof fence part-buried to stop them burrowing under?

Thanks, Nannysally. And yes, VC, the fence is part buried quite a way down, and curved rabbit-wards too. I think they've gone under it!

Sorry to hear all the problems you are having..and your positive attitude.

I've been having a good look around at deer deterrents for you...cos that's what I think your problem is.
Here have a look at this....

And in cold reality....you just need to make your plot less inviting than your neighbours' ( but don't tell them I said that!!! )

Thanks, Nicos, for the great link. There are some good ideas there, and it's interesting that deer and rabbits are mentioned more or less in the same breath, as we may have both. I am going to try some of those strategies. Also, it was a lovely article, funny and well written! It's amazing what trouble people will go to to help others on tinternet I also think (a bit like this wonderful forum)

We're off on hols on Thursday, so there isn't time to do very much before we go, but my short term strategy is:

Give the comfrey patch a short back and sides tomorrow (was going to do this soon anyway) as we can then see what's going on by the fence better.

Build a wire mesh cage over one of my raised beds so's I can at least plant out some seedlings.

Put wire mesh tubes around the french bean poles and runner bean poles so that they can regenerate while we are away.

Kiss goodbye to my peas, sweet peas, corn and strawberries this year

Go on holiday, drink plenty of strong German beer and refuse to fret about lottie while I'm away!

Might be a combination of wildlife!
We had a really solid bunny proof fence on ours last lottie....and guess how they got in?....yup, they managed to chew through the high grade bunny wire!

Yes, I think it is a combo. A friend this end is adamant that a badger is involved too.

Folks' rabbit proof fences at our lotties are the business, too, and the one they've tunneled under in my case was done by a professional company (the original plot holder next door paid for it).

But those bunnies are pretty determined! I'd be full of admiration for them if I wasn't also hopping mad.

Be aware that a bunny can leap a good 6 ft between a compost heap or something slightly raised outside the fencing, sort of like using it like a spring board ....so you need to make sure there us nothing close to the fence line .
You also need chicken wire on the ground under the gate too....but I'm sure you already know that.

One year we found a baby bunny living inside our plot which had grown too big to get out again

Thanks Nicos and crikey moses about the baby bunny!! I've often wondered whether that kind of thing could happen. I dread to ask what you did with the trapped now teenage bunny...

p.s. I've just seen that this thread has had over 1700 visits! I think that's because the title has the word 'disaster' in it. We all want to reassure ourselves that other people have disasters too, as someone said on the thread that VC started recently.
