Yes they are outdoors, I shall do what you advise although looking for halo's might be difficult because my own will keep getting in the way.

It's quite normal to panic at any brown spots.....

apparantly you can get magnesium deficiency from feeding exclusively with comfrey tea as the pottasium content is so high compared to the magnesium.
tea made with borage(which I have been pulling out by the sackfull from my empty neighboring plot )causes no such problems and is just as quick to decompose

Well today I looked for white halo's round the spots but found none. I also sprayed with Epsom salts and fed with Tomorite. I have brought a pot with a Christmas tree and placed it next to the potatoes saying "Right, this is your last warning" if you don't pick up I shall do a basil on you.

3 days on and two days since the epsom salts/ Tomorite treatment and they are no worse. Last years blight showed me that blight is alarmingly quick and I think had it been blight they would be in a bad state by now. Thanks for all the sound advice and links from you all.
Having had a scare I think I shall play safe and spray them with copper sulphate (can't spell bordouex).

What I don't understand is why a deficiency should cause spots, I can understand pale or yellow leaves but spots?

The other thing is do I continue to feed them/ they are already flopping over the containers and needing canes.

In the past I have given foliar feed twice,3/4 days apart & then just used tomato feed as per instructions on packet

Have a look at this link for an alternative explanation, although feeding them will do them no harm at all:

We seem to have 2 threads running on this problem, I am currently feeling sick in my stomach after reading Penellype's link.

Bill how are your Toms looking now?

Mine have gone the same way and look identical to your picture. Was just wondering if yours picked up or got worse?

It wasn't my toms it was the spuds, so far the toms are ok.

Well I have thrown everything at them, Epsom salts, Tomorite food, and bordeux spray. All I can say is they are no worse, still very spotty. I cant help feeling had it been blight they would all be dead by now. I am leaning towards some disease rather than a deficiency because it travelled from one plant to the other. If you have it in your tomatoes that disturbs me greatly because mine are just feet away from the potatoes.

Ah, that's what I get for speed reading.

The toms in my hanging pots are pretty bad and the toms in the growbags are just showing signs of the same.

Ironically the small toms that have formed on the hanging plants look lovely, very round and smooth (but as yet small and unripe). I was hoping this was going to be a deficiency of some sort so my toms could be saved but I'm not convinced this wont just spread. Whatever it is.
