I would go for the root damage theory, something is preventing it taking up sufficient water.

Have you tried spraying it with a dissolved V***** tablet?

As an experiment I've watered floppy this evening so I'll post in the morning how its doing.

Floppy tom looks fine this morning with the extra watering so I'm thinking its a root problem after all.
