Chilli plants not doing well

I started my seeds in a propagator in the "jiffy pellets"
No problem with germination and all seemed to do well.
I'm a total novice so googled whether or not I should remove from the pellet to plant on, anyway I found a post saying to plant in the pellet in the bigger pot and the roots should grow through the sides of the pellet.
After seeing virtually no growth I dug them
Up to find that the pellet was still fully intact and
Hardly any roots
I took the plants out of the pellets and re planted in new compost with some tomato food and some bonemeal.
These are the plants 2 weeks ago

Am I flogging a dead horse?



There has been growth but they should be so much bigger than this. Gutted

You might have put them into pots which are too big, you need to go up pot sizes gradually. After potting up a chilli and watering it in I don't water the pot again until it has almost fully dried out. They don't like being too wet, dry soil will make the roots spread out and search for moisture

Chillies, particularly the hot ones do grow slowly and take a long time to produce a lot of roots. They look OK to me, maybe a bit behind where I'd hope, but still OK.

Be patient and they'll come on over the next month.

😊😊 this makes me happy!
Other than the size and the amount of aphids I keep having to get off them, they look healthy.
They have grown since I took the pics I will take more tonight to show you.
I hope they HAVE grown now and it's not me imagining it!

I tried to grow chillis from seed and did not get one single sprouting seed so opted for some good old B&Q plants. this was nearly 2 months ago and they have grown but not seen one single chilli appear yet. Im a new gardener and very eager.... maybe a little too eager :-(

Yes! Too eager. You need lots of patience when growing chillies.

As for pot size, I plant mine up in morrissons flower buckets but you need to pot on gradually. What are you growing and how big are they. Got any photos?

It all depends on what type you have, I have a compact plant which already has fruit on them but the bigger growing plants don't yet. Most important thing is not to over water them

it was a mixture of supposedly 6 individual mixed chilli plants including jalepeno and so on but some cheeky so and so had swapped two of them for tomato plants. i didnt realise and could not be bothered to go back and explain so just planted them regardless. they have grown to about 30-40 cm high but nothing seems to be appearing. They look pretty healthy though. could take a picture when i get home from work

In your 1st post you said you potted into fresh compost and fed them. That could kill some plants because the fresh compost should have enough feed in for a while. That applies to all plants not just your chillies.

They look fine to me. I grow lots of them, and some are in flower and others are like yours.

What type are they?

I'd be tempted to repot them into smaller pots. Too much water around the tiny roots will kill them off, they can rot.

If you don't get a crop in the autumn, you can over winter them and get a head start next year.
