Slugs!!

They seem to be everywhere this year. Eating away at my plants!!!

I've got copper tape around my pots, they seem to of worked for a couple of week and now I don't think it is coz the little critters seem to manage get up. And I've tried beer traps but none of then have gone near.

Okay rant over with now lol.

I sprayed all my plastic pots with WD40 and, for once, my plants haven't been touched. I also only water the plants in the ground in the morning 'cause I heard that you get less slug/snail damage that way (rather than watering in the evening). They've been at my peas but nothing else so maybe give that a try...

Despite the general trend I have less slugs this year than last. In fact I got cocky and pinched a strawberry, popped it in my mouth, only to discover it had a slug on the back of it. I am still heaving now.

I thought we had a slug problem, tried everything... Then realised it was the pigeons! Netted the plants in question and they are growing strong.

I really found it hard to tell the different between slug and pigeon damage! I am new at all this after all!

Maybe them science bods should GM slugs to make em tasty for pigeons.

There is nothing worse than finding something like that - the half a caterpillar issue. When I was a kid I remember going out for a picnic and having strawberries which we naturally ate straight out of the punnet. My brother grabbed the biggest one and bit it in half, only to find some sort of creature, or rather half of it, inside.

I always cut my strawberries in half before eating!

Yikes! I wish I could look at slugs as land oysters (no chance).

I have just started soaking 'organic' slug pellets for a couple of hours before putting them out and it seems to make them more attractive to the slimey ones. At least they've eaten everything I put out last night so there is hope...

Was thinking of freezing some of our larger slugs and exporting to France as " filleted oven ready snails"

I seem to have a lot less slugs this year might be because I had a wasps next last year, do they kill them? I am not sure.

Also I have been leaving some dead plant matter lying around on the ground, I figure the slugs might eat that not may plants?

They savaged my lettuce last year but they are untouched this year.

I also put down slug pellets but I did that last year.

Anyway the basic idea is to leave and easy meal for the slugs in the hope they will leave whatever you are growing alone.

They have never touched my cukes, maybe because they taste like the ones I get from Sainsburys

My grandson, 5, loves to play in the sand pit, and the other week he filled an old watering can with fine sand and "watered" my flower troughs with it. Since then I have had no slug damage in the troughs.
I might try using sand as a barrier round some of my veg plants.
