Garlic Rounds

So, earlier in the year as some of my stored garlic began to sprout, I split it and stuck it in the ground or buckets or whatever I could find..

I have now ended up with a nice harvest of Garlic rounds, which I will plant in October and hopefully get some bulbs with a few cloves on them next June/July. I am then going to isolate these from my normal garlic plantings, and replant all the cloves from these rounds in October 2015. Results (if any!) to be observed versus normal saved cloves plantings....Can someone remind me to update the thread in July 2016 please

Hey BB, yes please do...
There is some who hold the theory that if you start with bulbils/rounds, that after a couple of years or replanting them, they will increase in size as they adapt to their environs, and you have your own localized strong version/variety...

Bet everyone thought I had forgotten this
February last year & brought a bulb in the farmers market in Funchal,put it to one side & forgot about it until April , it had sprouted so I split it & planted the cloves,they were lifted on the longest day (last year) with the other garlic,they had grown into "rounds" (single bulbs about 20mm diameter).
The "rounds" were planted out again on the shortest day last year & harvested on the longest day this year,they had developed into ......

I may have a picture of the "rounds" on another camera,IF I can find it/them I will post (might take a few days) here.
Also,I have put aside 30 cloves to replant on the shortest day this year see if they do actually get bigger/better with the passing years

I had "rounds" with my elephant garlic last year as some was a little late going in and it was mild,some were bigger than my maincrop onions and weighed in at over 100g.have replanted some this year along with the "normal" ones to see if there is any difference in crop.the rounds are easier to prep for the kitchen but too large for one meal unles you REALLY like garlic

This years update on mine, as there was a lot of "stuff" going on late last year I missed planting the cloves until late Spring of this year , I was not overly hopeful of getting an even reasonable crop when they were lifted on the shortest day, however here they are drying in Mrs.BB's greenhouse ........




About 2/3rd's are this size



Which considering the short period they were in the ground I'm very pleased with, a lateral advantage to Spring sowing here is that the allium leaf miner only has one chance of attacking them, so I think that is how I shall grow again next season

Sorry, being a bit dense here (nothing unusual, I know) but are garlic rounds the same thing as scrapes which I think are the little "extras" that you get on the stem of the greenery?

Go for it Yasai, over a period of time you should end up with garlic that is perfect for your soil conditions, at least you should according to the theory that Trip' & I are working to please post your findings in this thread
