  • Sweetcorn problem?

My plants look really healthy and the male flowers are forming on top, HOWEVER where I usually see the silks emerging, instead I have a leafy mass that looks like it's about to form new stems! I have fed them quite a lot of chicken poo this year and I'm worried that it's caused them to not produce female flowers. Any ideas? ( No pix I'm afraid)

My female tassels didn't appear until my top bits were fully out. I still have a few where the top is still emerging and no tassels yet

I just sprayed my sweetcorn with Provado .... loads of black aphids

I hate using provado and pesticides as I prefer organic, but there were loads

there were also some orangey looking beetles

Sometimes this could be the first indication of sweetcorn 'smut' disease. If the mass starts turning black or brown then that is what it is. If so, pull the plants out and destroy immediately so it doesn't spread to the healthy plants.

                  OO-ER missus!
Sadly still no sign of the silks. I've snipped off a little of the greenery where the silks should emerge but so far it looks like the male flowers are trousers down, ready for action where as the female flowers are still wrapped up in their winter woolys with a nice cup of cocoa and a Jackie Collins novel....

Give it time Richard, these plants wouldn't have survived millions of years of evolution if the didn't know what they are doing. besides there is nothing you can do about it.

I was considering trying to capture some pollen by shaking the tassles into an envelope and storing it in the fridge untill the females decide to get jiggy with it?

Might be a good idea. Nothing ventured as they say

When you consider that the pollen must remain viable for weeks blowing about on the wind, It should work.

I'm not sure it's viable for weeks, please refer to my original answer to your question lol
