I've read somewhere that it's best to sow pak choi after the longest day.

Hi Blackcatlois, welcome to the grapevine! Many varieties of so called Chinese Vegetables (which includes mizuna, joy choi, mibuna and the like) prefer conditions in the autumn. Some pak chois can be sown early in the year too, though. As Alice has pointed out, early and late sowings seem to do best - it's the height of summer they don't like.

you should chew everything at least 100 times Bex, Bolting is no good for you

It could have been the hot & dry April we had or anything else that has put the plants under stress. Basically what they think is happening is they are about to snuffit so want to go out with a bang ....... if you see what I mean

Well we have pak choied tonight at dinner!

I have been watching the tops but just hadn't realised the bottoms were rooting up nicely! So I cut a couple tonight and we had them for tea. I pan fried them in oil with some home grown garlic. Unfortunately I didn't season them enough, could have done with a bit more pepper and salt. Put the lid on for 4 minutes and they were done. I really enjoyed them but OH not so sure (he hates anything that is green!).

Can't wait to dig the next two up! Sorry should have taken a photo.

Meant to say, some of mine have bolted too.

Aerodynamically the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know that so it goes on flying anyway.

Mine were just about to bolt too. First 2 sowings were great, so no complaints. 3rd sowing was a different variety - Cantong White - so whether it's the variety or the season I don't know. Gone back to Mei Qing Choi for 4th sowing so see how it gets on. If it bolts I will leave it for an Autumn sowing.
The stuff about to bolt wasn't wasted. I cut it with a lettuce in the same condition and made some curried lettuce, pak choi and pea soup. Served with yoghurt and home made bread it was nice enough for lunch.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Throw in a bit of light soy sauce. That'll replace the salt.

The sparrows have been enjoying mine! I've had to net them to keep the little perishers off! Don't tell me their numbers are going down, we have hundreds!
