  • long toms

I was watching a programme some weeks ago on the amount of tomatoes the commercial growers get from each plant and as I have 3 extra tomatoes in large tubs in the back greenhouse(north facing),each had grown to roof height, about 6ft 6ins upward(leanto) so I put some guide wires up going towards the sun and they stretch along about 7/8ft, I counted the trusses on the nearest plant and it has 8 set and one more truss just growing, it will be interesting to see how we get on and if it does go well I might start doing it each year, i will let all know how it develops, thirty odd years and I never thought to do this before.

Commercial growers often allow one or two side-shoots to grow up as well thus making three vines per (indeterminate) plant.

They feed lots and manage the older, lower leaves as well.
The proof of the growing is in the eating.
    Leave Rotten Fruit.
    Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potasium - potash.
    Autant de têtes, autant d'avis!!!!!

that's handy as I have been looking closer at the other 2 plants and they both seem to be using a sideshoot on the "blind" side, i will count and tie them in place tomorrow(when the heavy rain stops) but the "front" one is just one strong stem, so far... and I feed sundays and Wednesdays ,much to OH annoyance when she wants to get somewhere early I have to water/feed first, priorities first, shopping/visiting a poor second .....I use wilko tom/fruit and veg feed and miraclegro tom feed alternatively as their contents listed differ ,not by much but not the same, sweet and Hungarian wax peppers now over 6ins and the Olympe toms the size of grapefruit, so its working up to now....

I prefer to let some side shoots grow to get more, and wondered why others do not do it. I can understand a grow bag might not allow it, but soil does. Mine are outside, sungold i.e. cherry.

Biggest problem I have in greenhouse with leaving side-shoots on intermediate vines is supporting them... all to often the joint is weak and will break unless given good support.

Outside I leave gardeners delight and sungold alone and do not remove any side-shoots. I do support the plant but not as carefully as in the greenhouse. Even on Alicante and ailsa craig, although these seem more susceptible to breakage.

I try a few letting one side shoot grow. Perhaps it's worth it outside with cherry type toms but as said above the support is tricky in the GH while trying to get airflow in and around the plant. I find they are more likely to get botrytis problems even with taking off leaves. I have better results with taking the side shoot off and giving it some room to grow in its own.
