  • First red toms!!

Was very pleased to notice a couple of blushing tomatoes in the garden, earlier than I expected.

The plant was marked Alicante but clearly is not as they are too small for that, I think they might be moneymaker or maybe cherry but they seem too big for cherry.
Anyway whilst I was looking at other plants to try and discover what type they were I found a couple of even redder cherry tomatoes. (definitely cherry, very small)

So I am very pleased with that, much earlier than I expected, I think it is normally well into August before I got any red ones before (but my memory is not that good, and I have lost some photos I too on my hard drive (maybe able to recover them) to help date them).

I did make an effort to plant earlier this year though. Might post a picture later.

We carefully split our first tomato between 4 of us today. Maksota and very sweet

I'm growing Tumbling Toms but there seems to be more foliage than flowers...anyone know if that's normal? Have quite a few fruits just the same, still greenish yellow.

Nice one. Just dashed out to check mine, but all are still green. Last year my first outdoor sungold turned orange on 18th July, so hopefully not long to wait now.

That is why I was so pleasantly surprised, I had not even started looking yet!!

It is like they refuse to turn red if they know you are looking, I think they are scared of being eaten

Congrats Esbo - the first tomato is always a treat
I've picked a handful of Rambling Red Stripe tomatoes - but being stripey (red and green), I'm not sure when they're really ripe. The first one tasted good however

I have had six or seven off my tumblers and yes the foliage is a mess but there are absolutely dozens of tomatoes on them. In fact I am considering pulling some off to make the others ripen quicker and get bigger.
The thing with tomatoes is you wait and wait for them to ripen, then suddenly it is "What the hell am I going to do with this lot"

Not sure, some of mine seem to be more foliage too.
I think if there is too much nitrogen you tend to get more foliage as I found when I gave one plant a lot of natural liquid fertilisers, so I don't that much any more, but I might try it on some of the weaker looking plants.

We are doing great this year with tomatoes. Had our first few about two weeks ago. Red Alert, Gardeners Delight, Sungold and Black Cherry.
Over the weekend we have had some Alicante and one Roma.
