How do you get a truss of ripe tomatoes then?

That was from a few days ago, one has now been eaten!



Also have these which are moneymaker I think



And this big one a beefsteak type I think don't remember ever buying those seeds.



I think that may have blossom end rot though!

Those glossy pics you see of trusses of tomatoes two miles long with every tomato a glossy red colour are the imagination of the magazines! There is a picture editing tool called Photoshop or maybe even Paint Shop Pro, which is responsible for turning reality into a publishers dream. They are also responsible for misrepresenting real life and thus making the average gardener feel rather inadequate. Don't believe those pics, your tomatoes are doing exactly what they should do, be proud of them.

I know all about Photoshop, I use it every day at work! But I have seen these mythical trusses of red tomatoes in the supermarket.....

That could also have a lot to do with the growing conditions, which will be carefully controlled in large greenhouses. Gardeners can't hope to get the same results from mediterranean plants in the UK climate, even under glass.

I don't care about trusses at all.

I just pick them when they are reddish!

I find that if I leave them on the plant for too long, then they become quite soft and just fall off the truss onto the floor....

I am growing red alert.

How do you get a truss of ripe tomatoes then?

That's a very good question, one I have asked myself. I have had trusses of gardeners delight a foot long or more that nearly made it. I think commercial growers use a lot of tricks to get this, The variety, timing (holding back the plant by the use of temperature and watering regime then letting it suddenly go mad. They may well remove trusses so all the energy goes into less fruit etc. All in all quite a sophisticated operation and not worth it for likes of me. I am hovering over each one just waiting to pounce on it and gobble it down. Later in the season when there are more than I can eat I can let the trusses expand a bit.
