What's up with my cabbages?

They've been netted since transplanting, so not birds or cabbage white. Is it simply slugs/snails munching the crowns?

Looks like caterpillar to me, how fine was the netting? Have you had a good hunt amongst the leaves to see if the culprit is hiding in there somewhere?

Looks like slugs to me. I am having the same problem. Having to go out at night to get rid of them.

Mine did the exact same thing, and I'm convinced it was slugs munching on the plants. It's why I've given up on growing cabbages - too many slugs around here. No number of traps or deterrents keeps them away and I don't want to use slug pellets. So I've just decided to grow other things instead!

Hmm, Catapillas,snails,and slugs. I'd say it was a group effort. Butterflys can get through 10mm netting, I'd advise enviromesh or some such which has a much finerr weave. Also make sure the nets doesn't touch or they'll lay through it. I've found it easier to grow cabbage from spring to summer before the butterflys are out, you can get a couple of crops in during that time if you use a small fast grower like Hispi or grey hound.

Mesh is 7mm I think so pretty sure it's not caterpillars. Probably slug/snails, but better the devil you know I guess. I must admit, whilst Brussels seem to do great, I've never had a whole lot of success with cabbages. I'm going for these and some spring ones - if no luck, I might knock them on the head in future.

That's enough space for butterflies to get in to lay eggs unfortunately

Caterpillar damage is likely to leave you with bare ribs & stalks.

You have slug/snail damage, in patches. If you looked within the leaves of the cabbages you will find the little culprits

Agree with the slug/snail damage. On the top centre middle leaf there is slug/snail poo. Caterpillar poo is quite different - its in round lumps and is often green.

I`m going with what Two_Sheds and Penellype have said above this post, slug and snails damage, lost a few of my greyhound cabbages to these little blighters this year but, don`t give up, each year is different.
