New potatoes for Christmas

Apologies for using the "c" word so early in the year!
I am thinking of trying to grow some new potatoes for Christmas Day in a bag/sack.
Can anyone suggest the best variety for this and also when should they be planted.

I'll stick with roasties....much easier than trying to grow spuds when they don't want to be growing.

My best results were with Albert Bartlett .. Vivaldi,planted 22 weeks before lifting.Keep your container off the ground (cut down pallet stuffed with straw works well) & as the temperature drops take into a cold greenhouse/cold frame & surround with straw/bubblewrap to help retain soil temperature.

I grew a couple of bags of sarpo axona last year, planting them around the end of July. I found them tricky because the foliage grew really tall and made it difficult to move them under cover when the weather got cold. They did produce potatoes for Christmas, but they were small and the whole lot wouldn't have made a family meal (8 seed potatoes used, 4 to a bag).

So far so good Richard........15 buckets all with good growth. The first bucket is due to be emptied on 1st Sept. The bucket will then be re-planted.

Are you using lights and a greenhouse over winter?

No lights Richard as I don't have power. Just using Polytunnel & plenty of straw.
