  • What can i plant in now

We have some space available on our allotment, what can we plant now.

We have some brassicas but we are not that keen on cabbage etc., so really don't want anymore.

Apart from salad crops, can we get in another crop of peas? maybe French beans

    Any help appreciated

Its probably getting a bit late for peas and beans, although you could give it a go and see what happens. You might have some success if you start them off in pots to protect them from slugs, caterpillars etc until they are big enough to cope.

You might get away with beetroot and you can certainly sow the related spinach beet and chard now. You can also sow some varieties of carrot - the small round ones, and some of the nantes varieties. Check the packet of seeds for sowing times. Spring onions can also be sown now, although to be frank I have never had any success with these.

Hi Treepixie, it's not too late to sow mangetout. Hi Penellype, the day you mentioned that Shiraz mangetout don't taste very nice I sowed some ordinary ones in alongside!

It'll soon be time for the Japanese onions to come on the shelves plus you could put some Garlic in if you like it.......Sweet Peas can be over wintered with some protection.

Japanese onions are winter hardy so you plant them now for harvest early next year. I tried a variety called Shenshu Yellow once, but the slugs ate them over winter.

Dwarf french beans will be ready in 6 weeks, so you should be able to get a crop from that.
