I grow black Russian for its great taste and also olympe for the sheer size of the crop off each plant and their flavour, plus banana legs, chocolate cherry and Shirley, now the first fruits(from an early sowing) are changing colour so cropping from all of them wont be long..

Not the best in flavour IMO but wouldn't be without them, even so
I thought that abut Garden pearl so decided to give them a miss this year.

Yes, definitely common, probably because it's very reliable, has a great flavour and has a huge yield. I grow loads of varieties every year, some varieties I will only try once but GD will always be on my list along with black cherry, Pantano and Black Russian.

I might even sneek in some Sunbaby's althought my husband a little fussy with his Tomatoes.
Gardeners delight is a small cherry tom, roma is a plum tomato best for cooking.

If your OH is fussy with tomatoes definitely give moneymaker the elbow, there are loads of lovely tasting tomatoes out there to try but taste is personal so you need to try out quite a few! Most people think sungold fabulous, small cherry tom that is very sweet. Black cherry has a little more bite so is my favourite. So many different varieties colours and tastes that far outweigh moneymaker you won't bother with it again.

On Scarlet's recommendation, I'm growing Black Icicle this year. They're much larger fruits than I expected - none ripe yet though so can't comment on flavour.
I stopped growing Moneymaker years ago - don't like the name either - smacks of commercialism.

Actually, I grow black icicle and dancing with smurfs and they are both fabulous. Think they both originally came from Polly, in one of the tomato seed circles.
Those two are on my forever list along with a lovely yellow tomato, seed received from another grape, NellieM, name escapes me at the mo...

Black Cherry are a definite no no I'm sorry. It's hard enough getting him to eat salad never mind black Tom's. He quite likes large very red juicy tomatoes. I need something that doesn't have many seeds as he wont eat them either.
I made some tomato soup last year with Moneymakers. The soup was very orange in colour. What kind of tomatoes would i have to use to get a very dark red soup?

I remember about 25 years ago a schoolboy being featured on Look North (or some similar local news programme) who was making loads-a-money selling Moneymaker tomatoes he was growing in his family's greenhouse.

They were so prolific he had made a small fortune and was hailed as a budding entrepreneur!

Like many other people I bought seeds the following year and yes, they were prolific but tasted of stale dish-water. I, like many others, never grew them again!

Sungold and Gardeners Delight are my staples with generally one other from Galina, Ailsa Craig and Alicante.

One thing I have realised from comments on this forum is that we all have different growing conditions and a variety that suits one person's conditions will not suit another persons!

I've grown things like Black Russian, Tigrella and other varieties that have been recommended and found low yields or crops late in the season whilst other Grapes are repeating their success with them! My choices seem to suit me although I'm having a bad year with them in the greenhouse even though they are fine outside.
The proof of the growing is in the eating.

                      Autant de têtes, autant d'avis!!!!!

You need to train him, Natalie.
Maybe add some tomato puree to your soup - that might darken it. Whatever the colour, if its homegrown its good by me

Agree about Sungold (delicious) and Moneymaker (bland). Would also like to put a shout out for Latah (Real Seed Co), tasty and a vast sprawling plant that doesn't need pinching out, a big plus in my book. Am also trying Coeur de Boeuf, Sweetie, Green Zebra and Belle this year, so will report back. In a fit of despair, I said on another thread that I was going to give up on tomatoes next year, but things in the placcy greenhouse are looking a lot better now.

p.s. Natalie, if you roast the tomatoes in the oven with some olive oil first, it darkens the soup. And also tastes fab!
