  • Pea leaves being ravaged

I am now loosing count of the pests that are attacking everything i am trying to grow. My sweet and edible peas have paper thin leaves. On closer inspection they are tiny caterpillers. I have rubbed off and hosed all i can see but what on earth are they ? Never had this before. Oh, and mildew on leaves for good measure.

Mildew is common on late sown peas - they're really a Spring crop, suited to cooler conditions.

For the caterpillars - either spray with Provado Ultimate Fruit & Vegetable Bug Killer or carry on picking them off.

What are they ? Never heard of peas getting stripped by catterpillers.

There are various moths that lay eggs on all sorts of plants - one of the commonest is silver Y moth, which ate almost everything I treid to grow last year. These have green caterpillars with a yellowish stripe along each side. Cabbage white butterflies (small whites) also lay eggs on plants that are not cabbages - they are fluttering around my peas fairly constantly at the moment. There may well be other species that eat pea leaves. Leaves are food, and there is almost certain to be various pests that eat the leaves of any given plant.

Pea moth can also be a problem - these caterpillars don't eat the leaves, they wander round looking for a pea pod and burrow inside then eat the peas. Keep an eye open for htem when shelling peas from late July onwards.

Just looked at your posts, you actually haven't posted about any successes, only failures. Surely something must have gone right for you ......
