New onion bed

I have dug a new onion bed which is free draining ready for the autumn planted sets....should I add manure now or just BFB?
My onions are never that great...tasty but not very large....any help or suggestions will of course be gratefully received

My understanding for size is spacing, give them more room and you'll get bigger ones. I space at 4"-6" but get medium onions.

Don't think spacing is a problem with onions. Its more about feeding them properly and watering correctly. I am just about to start lifting these and am expecting 3 to 4 pounds each.

Blimey, My onions are rubbish this year. What type are those and when did you plant them?

In a tub i presume. How much water are you giving them?


My onions were good last year. I dug trenches later in the year, Left them open. Weeded
and put fairly fresh mature and leaves and grass clippings in Oct/Nov time and left it open
to the elements. Then the following year I sprinkled in a handful of manure called grow
organic Put the removed soil back to make a mound and planted the onion sets.

Best crop ever.

I just raked in some of the grow organic where I planted the beetroot and that came out great also.

My compliments, I thought mine were good but those are superb.

My mate gave me the seedlings earlier this year, that he started from seed back in Oct/Nov last year. They were his throw out's after he had planted his raised beds.

The container was filled using old peat compost mixed with Growmore 7-7-7 along with some pelleted onion fertiliser and dried FYM. Loads of water, in this weather I slosh a gallon a day in when the suns gone down. After 10 weeks I gave them a supplementary feed once a week, one week high nitrogen the next high potash.
