Strawberries

Is there something wrong with these strawberries?

They not producing any fruit now and look to me like wood.

My friend who I work with said it could be because I have to strawberry varieties in on hanging basket that's why my strawberries have gone like that. Is this true?

Is that the old flower head? Just cut it off - its been and gone
Does the plant look green and healthy?

Yes I think. Is it old when I've took the strawberries from it?

The leaves look good.

Each flower produces a strawberry that you pick. All that's left is the stem and that dies off as its done its job. That stalk won't produce any more flowers so cut it off.

I may sound stupid now but how will the same plant produce strawberries next year?

It needs a bit of tlc now, and then it will start up production next spring - produce new flower buds and they will produce the fruit.

When the runners start growing from your strawberrys, get pots ready for them to grow into. I usually use clothes pegs to hold them down until they are rooted. Mind you, I do back yard gardening, if you have an allotment, you don't need the pots

The plants will keep for 3 to 4 years and each year will produce little plantlets that you can peg down into another pot to make another plant. I think the problem you have is growing them in a hanging basket and would imagine hard to control the watering,they may do better in seperate pots say 9 inch if you do not have room in the garden or raised bed,once they start to die clip off the tops they grow back next year then you can feed with tomato feed as the berries form

My hanging basket strawbs are looking similar. this time of year I give them a light feed of high nitrogen feed but in this weather make sure you keep them well watered.

Later in the year I will take them down cut out the dead stuff and put them in a sheltered corner until spring. Then again feed with a high nitrogen feed to kick start the green growth followed by high potash when the berries appear.

Make sure when you are 'pruning' them you do not cut out the crown or you could loose the plant.
