Resurrection of a 5-year old thread? Wow! Good one though. I "only" have my garden, which over the years has gone from ornamental to vegetable. Every Spring I pinch a bit more grass. Himself doesn't mind, it's less to cut. I would be unable physically to manage an allotment, but I can take my time and take breaks in the house by growing at home.

Started in the back garden with containers (year 1), then bought a greenhouse for the back garden (year 2), then dug a very small patch in the back garden (year3) and this year i have dug most of the front lawn up (the wife took a bit of convincing though) and put 4 raised beds and 4 long veg patches (which will be turned into raised beds) so now my gardens are my allotments!

As you can see, i think ive got the bug for it now!

Once the kids have fled the nest (awhile yet mind) most of the back lawn is comming up aswell!

      I loves it! lol

        I grow at home.

I have an acre or so and have been working on it since we built the house a couple of years ago. It'll probably take me years to get everything sorted but I try and do at least one job every day (even if its only small)

There is a new private allotment opened near me advertising plots for less than a pound a week. Not sure how many takers he'll have though, as we are in the country and a good 20 minute drive from the nearest "big" town.

          A bit of both.

Most things are on the allotment but I've been doing toms & salad at home for the last 3 years as we have a nice walled garden and no greenhouse currently on the plot. Most things get started at home in a blow-away and then move over the road.

However, I'm about to move to a proper house which is much closer to the plot (about 5 min walk) and I've a nice 6x10 greenhouse on order for the allotment. Hopefuly this means I can get to the lottie more regularly and you never know, maybe get Mrs Nelson more involved as well.

Home for me, made 4 raised beds for it. No allotments nearby till some private ones opened but they are expensive..... Not sure I could manage to keep an allotment up, plus it would mean actually going there for a time to get things done. When its in the garden its easy to pop out for a few mi nutes here and there.

At home for me. Got my garden 3 years ago - the back garden is split between the 3 chickens and my veg plot. Shed and tiny greenhouse were already here, have added 6 raised beds and a compost heap. Also do containers on the patio - salads, dwarf cherry tree, blueberry bushes. I work from home so like the fact I can just pop out and do a 5 minute job whenever the sun comes out. I like the idea of an allotment (community and gyo chat) but fear my back problem would prevent me from keeping it in check.

First year at growing so starting off at home, I do like the appeal of an allotment and have been to a work colleagues one who took it over last Autumn. To be in the vicinity of others who enjoy growing veg sounds very appealing as my wife is already growing bored of me banging on about 1cm of growth I'll see how this year goes and if the bug is still alive in me in 12 months time i'll get my name down on the waiting list. Only know of one lottie near me though which covers 4 villages :/

I grow everything in varying shapes and sizes of containers. Would like an allotment but only if it has been cleared of weeds and has been dug over.

We just use the garden, everytime we need to expand it is easy, and at this rate the whole garden will be for growing. We get no problems from vandals as allotments get, its just out the door, which means it can get all the attention it requires.

Used to grow at home but there is no way I'd be able to be self sufficient in veggies without my lottie. I still start a lot of things off at home and have some fruit, salad and herbs but the garden is now pretty much back to being ornamental but relatively easy maintenance. The lottie however is wonderful and far more industrial than the garden could even be, added to which I like it being away from the house (only a couple of miles though) as I don't get distracted by household jobs I should be doing and can concentrate on the job in hand.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

At home in raised beds and large and small pots and tubs. I have enough growing space to keep me occupied and get reasonable crops. Of course I only grow what I enjoy eating and no space is wasted.

Well I guess my forum name says it all everything out back. I only work part time now and love to be able to just walk out back and sit and watch things grow, sometimes have to sit for a very long time LOL

Mine did, but I've since filled in the pond, dug up some lawn and now I grow in beds.
