Sorry SueA, did make me chuckle. I can't even ride a bike so that one touched home in a funny way...

I grow at home in containers, and my greenhouse.
Have the use of my mothers garden (which is very big, so do all veg there) There is also a large greenhouse on the garden which my dad left me when he died. All in all i'm ok for space so long as my mam is still in residence, so fingers crossed, she is 88 now.

And your hands begin to harden.

Andrewo - walled gardens aren't all they are cracked up to be. SR and I have said elsewhere we have lots of wind problems. well you know what I mean ..............

Am doing a short day course here in learning about windbreaks - so hopefully might be able to break the area up a bit ...... watch this space.

Really interesting seeing how many grow at home - I thought too Poultrychat that I was in the minority. Well done for starting that one up.

I've got a tiny, tiny roof terrace so grow some veg in pots and an old sink. Just got my first allotment. I work full time and worried that I wouldn't do it justice but I managed to get my parents involved. They're retired so got loads of time.

It's great, we had just turf..they've dug loads and planted loads but I'm feeling really left out, only get chance at weekends to get there, they do send me the odd photo so I know what it looks like!!

I was always told that a wall protected a length 3 times its height. 6' wall gave you 18' of shelter. Isn't this the case or is it the particularly strong wind you suffer with (if you see what I mean)

i'd love a 'proper' garden, one with some grass and flowers. Have a roof terrace just isn't the same!

You could grow flowers in pots Jaybex, & being higher up you probably get less frost than if you were on the ground.

You know that a man dosent know what a womans clematis looks like. Well I had some runner beans to plant so I did a bit of weeding and well weeded her clematis.....that was it no more veg in the garden off to the allotment society cheque book out and I was the proud lease holder of a piece of the Mekong delta jungle..

Unfortunately Nick it seems to be the speed the wind comes down off the wall - theres probably a scientific term for it - but believe me it fairly flattens the plants in its path. I have bits of the garden I don't bother planting anything in. But perhaps after my windbreak course I will find some wind tolerant chappie (or chappet to be PC) which will stand there totally unaffected. (always optimistic!)

I'm with the gardening at home gang. Got an acre to veg, another to fruit, 2 tunnel tents and planning a vineyard for my retirement. About 7 acres in all, at least 2 of which are wild.

I had stabilisers on my bike until I was about 9 & then I flew over the handlebars , over a wall & into someone's front garden at the bottom of a hill- never have been very well-balanced in many respects!
