Is there still time..?

Hello

My first time in my allotment and my french beans (2 feet high and very healthy) have all been eaten by slugs.

Is there still time to plant beans (any kind) or I have lost the time for this growing season

Depends where you are - down south here I reckon it is worth a try. The slugs have been dreadful this year.

If you have spare seeds and compost I'd give it a go, leave the seedling to get a decent size before planting out that way they might stand a chance against the slugs.

Like you, many of my beans have been scoffed by slugs .... some of my beans are only 8in tall because the tips have gone, but they're producing beans ....
I've tried sowing mid July, but no luck - the weather cooled before the beans could produce anything
BUT ..... it could have been a different story if the summer had lasted longer ....
give it a go and see what happens .....

I always grow a second crop of french beans round about now. So I say go for it. I get them going in modules and then plant them out. Use slug pellets or other protection, if you have slug prblems.

Usually my ONLY crop of beans is from a July sowing! I suppose you could try covering them with a cloche or fleece or something if the weather cools too much too soon? I agree with others too - start them in pots and leave until they have a few leaves so they can stand to lose one or two when you plant out. I sometimes (if it's not scalding hot) protect my young plants with plastic bottle cloches for a few days until they've established to help keep slugs off them - make zig zag edges around the top to help even more! You can remove the bottles when the plants have grown a bit.

I have few french bean plant i bought 4 weeks back but delayed planting

They are still in small pot, 6 inch high, turning yellow and trying to flower
Is there a way i can put them in allotment and revive them ???

Last week I sowed about 50 different beans that I had spare. I've cut some 8" collars out of drainpipe to cover them as they break the surface. Seems to be working so far.

Your plants will be suffering from a lack of nutrients in their pots, hence the yellowing. They'll perk up once planted out .

There's a variety of dwarf French beans called "Speedy". Supposed to crop in 10 weeks. Got to be worth a go.

I've not had the best year on the plot, largely the result of neglect on my part. I pulled myself together a couple of weeks ago and checked all my seed packets to see what could be sown in July. Beans were among them, so I've sown another few rows and we'll see what comes up.

The bean plants put out a few weeks ago have been very small but have thrown out a few decent pods. I had serious bean envy at a friend's on Wednesday this week - hers were the proverbial beanstalk.
