What's happened to these tomatoes??

Does anyone know what could of happened to the below tomatoes?
I gave my brother moneymakers and red pear grown from seed when they were about 5 inches tall. After a couple of weeks they started growing deformed and twisted. They have since grown to 5ft and started producing tomatoes.
It's just the first 10inches look freaky and I want to make sure it's ok for him to eat the toms.
Mine are fine and grown from same seeds so something must of happened in the first few weeks of planting out in his garden.

So long as the Toms look ok, I wouldn't be worried.

I think roots would have grown from those nodules if the stems had been earthed up.
If the tomatoes look okay, eat them - I would

It's been infected with a brussel sprout! If the top of the plant is fine and the tomatoes are healthy looking I really wouldn't worry. Whatever it was the plant has grown away from it.
