  • Ex-hurricane Bertha this weekend

You may have heard Bertha mentioned in weather forecasts recently. This is currently a tropical storm (downgraded from a hurricane) and is making its way across the atlantic towards us as these things do.

It is unusual for us to get a bad one of these this early in August, but there is that possibility here. It all hinges on how Bertha interacts with the jet stream, and because this is uncertain there is a lot of difference between the forecast models concerning what happens on Sunday. The best case scenario is that it disappears off harmlessly into France without strengthening much at all. The worst case is that it ends up sitting slap on top of us with gale force winds and torrential rain. the further north it goes the windier it will get.

This is the latest Met Office forecast track for Bertha Ex Bertha may still give an unsettled weekend - Met Office

Bear in mind that the worst of the winds are always around the southern and western sides of these storms.

If you have structures such as runner bean supports or other things that could be blown down it might be a thought to try to secure them, bring loose patio furniture inside so it doesn't blow about and if you have a greenhouse with its door open, make sure there is a way out for the wind by leaving the vents or windows fully open too.

Keep an eye on the forecasts, as this storm has the potential to be really quite nasty, although it may fizzle out into nothing at all.

Thanks for warning, it's possible to hit us on the south coast but they are not sure yet, so I best make sure everything is tied down.

I just checked what BBC weather says and:
        "Met Office Warnings Issued For:
        Surrey
        Yellow warning of rain
        From:

        Updated 28 minutes ago
Heavy, slow moving and possibly thundery showers are likely on Friday.

The public should be aware of the risk of localised flooding.

        Yellow alert of rain
        From:
        0015 on Sun 10 August
        To:
        2345 on Sun 10 August
        Updated 1 hour ago
There is the risk of severe weather during Sunday as a depression tracks over, or close to, the UK. At this stage there is more than average uncertainty in the forecast, but the public should be aware of the risk of heavy rain, strong winds and large waves, sufficient to disrupt transport and make outdoor activities dangerous.

This is a particularly volatile situation, and this warning is likely to be changed as the event approaches.

A list of all UK Warnings can be found on our More UK Weather page."
This is specific to my area so check your own if you need to.

Best be taking the parasols down then. All my tomatoes in buckets have been moved and shored up. Trusses are getting heavier by the day. Runner bean frame was new this year, so hopefully will be ok.

No - it's all a bit vague at the mo - seems like there is a reasonable chance it will head for France and fizzle out. But then again it might not. Depends how it interacts with the jet stream.

Most likely track appears to be along the South coast, up more or less through London then out through East Anglia. If it goes South then North France, Belgium and Holland get it.

What gets me is that it arrives the best night for the persids Meteor shower. So cloud before, cloud during and cloud after. I canot recall a clear night for a major meteor shower for about 4 years.

I absolutely agree Kirk - meteor shower, comet, aurora, name the date and time and it will be cloudy. I remember seeing beautiful photos of the aurora posted on Twitter taken in Norwich. I spent most of that evening staring at a thick blanket of cloud

With regard to Bertha, although the forecast track is shown as a narrow line, there will be a much wider area of rain and wind. This recent article discusses some of the possibilities Weatherweb TV - the forecast map for Sunday at the bottom shows rain in yellow and green which has moved in from the west during the morning. The lines (isobars) indicate the wind - the closer they are together the windier it is. This particular solution is one of the worst I have seen, placing the centre of the low much further north than some. The physics of this sort of storm, with the jet stream in the position that it currently is, means that the further north the system is, the more wound up it becomes and the wetter and windier the weather associated with it is. The strongest winds are always to the south and west of the low.

I hope it doesn't come our way. We are meant to be going camping start of next week.

So... anyone seen Bertha then? It got a bit windy here at 3pm, enough to make the tree branches move a bit, and that's all. Bit of a damp squib really.
