Building an anti butterfly cage.

I am going to build cage for my cabbage and cauliflowers etc It will be tall enough to walk in and have a door.
The black netting I usually use is no longer available cos my garden centre has moved. So I need to buy it online. I want good quality stuff. Can anyone recommend any supplier? You cant really judge the quality of this stuff from a picture so anyone who has actually used some they can vouch for would be good.

Or would I be better off using environmesh making the cage useable for carrots and maybe fruit? Because it occurs to me if I am making this an almost permanent structure I will not be able to grow the same thing in it all the time due to the need to rotate stuff. Its hard when you have a very small patch.

Going to be very expensive to use Environmesh. You can buy it online, might be cheaper. Dobbies sell a wide range of netting, you can buy what you want off the roll, don't know how that works out costwise, presumably other GC do the same.

If you go to your local allotment on a Saturday/Sunday morning, they may have a shed/shop with various netting on the roll - I'm sure that they will be happy to sell to you (or charge you a nominal membership fee). Prices are normally really keen, and you can see what you're getting.

We've just built something similar but on a smaller scale this year - a wooden frame to cover a raised bed. We've built it in 2 halves so we can pick it up and move it, and I've currently thrown debris netting over it. I use debris netting all the time because it's cheap and flexible, and protects against most things provided you sow up the row of hook holes along the middle of course! I buy mine on 50m rolls because I also sell it on, but you can certainly buy it in smaller pieces on ebay and amazon. We will of course want to see photos of the finished thing when it's all completed!

My fruit cage is made with debris netting Bill,works a treat it lets in light & allows plenty of air movement Plus being double knitted it has quite a lot of stretch,which is handy when it has a good few inches of snow on the "roof"

Bill if you click the photo of the yellow netting you can see the holes that need stitching up they're more like slits than holes though.

Funnily enough, I got some of 2m x 50m green netting from the same company.

I've still got work to do with the ground, hence I haven't unrolled it to check for slit holes.

Anyway, is the cage for an allotment or for your garden ?

The reason I ask is - would traditional black netting be more aesthetically pleasing on the eye in your garden, rather than a bright plastic green/orange/blue, etc.

I built my cage using Black debris netting and you're right Kevin it's not as noticeable as the coloured ones.

Knowing what I know now Bill, taking cost, labour, headaches into consideration. I would try & pick up a cheapo tunnel similar to the one you have, put the cover on the frame, cable tie the doors to the frame leaving about a foot extra over the arch, cut away the rest of the cover & replace with debris netting. You would already have the frame & doors, all you would need is the netting. Just a though but that is what I am going to do once my covers start to deteriorate.
