Very, very difficult. Mares tail is a primitive plant, neither a monocot (like grass and bulbs) nor a dicot (like most broad leaf plants). As such it tends not to respond to the ordinary weedkillers, although the tops may burn off. The roots are black so very hard to see, brittle so they break easily, and go down upto 8 feet. Really all that I can suggest is that you dig up what you see, and keep doing it. This will weaken the plant and stop it spreading, and that's about the best you can hope for.

I haven't tried it. As I understand from reading about it, Kurtail is a professional use weedkiller and possibly not suitable for land which grows food. There is more information about it here: http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...es-tail-2.html

kurtail does get rid of marestail.it is approved for use by farmers etc. google it and watch the video on site.
I cut the bottom out of a plastic bottle and placed it over the marestail and sprayed in to the bottle.very little falls on the soil using this method.i used it 3 years ago and very rarely see it now

Personally I wouldn't want to put it anywhere near my plot and it's use by people not used to using these types of things particularly worries me (a lot seem to over dose). I think there are far worse weeds but if anybody is going to go the chemical (rather than manual) route please read the instructions and be responsible
