i start onion sets in trays of compost in the greenhouse - it gives them a good headstart on the weeds - once they've sprouted and developed good roots, I dig the bed for them and plant out
garlic cloves go straight in the ground and hope for the best - i'll be using garlic from sainsburys again this year

I always start my garlic in the gh in modules. Planted direct, it just fails on my soil (I can grow good fat garlic in the school beds, but not on my allotment. My soil is too light & sandy & dry)All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

Onions in pots and garlic on SFG spacings in Morrisons buckets in the tunnel. My soil is usually just too wet and cold to be worth putting either out over Winter. The garlic doesn't go outside til it's quite big and I have run out of space inside."A life lived in fear is a life half lived."
PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!
