I saw this on a programme, might have had carol Klein in it. Basically vegetable peelings, newspaper, any sawdust waste from rabbits, Guinea pigs etc., seaweed, leaf mould, anything that will rot down.
Saying that my dad has grown runner beans in the same spot for 4 years and he just throws a bit of manure on every spring and has a bumper crop.

I don't trench either, waste of time. Instead, I mulch my soil, all year round, with chopped up weeds & old plants, grass clippings etc.
As well as feeding the soil, it keeps weeds down & moisture in the soil.
