Hi, I have been advised to mulch around my courgettes, squash and cucumbers - was going to buy some from the garden centre in a big bag unless there is some better advice on here?

    thanks.

Have you any home-made compost? Or grass cuttings? You can use these as a mulch. The whole point is to stop the soil round your plants drying out. If you don't have any mulch available either sink a pot or bottle into the ground next to each plant and water into that so that the water gets straight to the roots, or plant each plant in a saucer like depression and water into that. All these plants need quite a lot of water to develop and fruit well.

You could also use pebbles or gravel as a mulch. Or bark chippings.

thanks for all the advice - I have sunk a bottle next to my squash and cucumbers so hopefully that will help. I'll add some grass clippings around the general area though. (Belt and braces, eh?)
