  • A tip for showing onions

just a wee tip to you folks showing off your onions. They look much much better if they are lifted and ripened off so that they have a lovely golden colour and the necks are best allowed to shrink back as well so that they can be tied tightly with natural raffia. Takes up to a month after lifting. So lift them, peel back to a clean unbroken skin and the leave on a tray of sawdust or similar. I keep mine in the tunnel or the greenhouse and tie them just before they go on the benchor in your case, it would be immediately before taking the photograph .

I do realise that red onions won't turn yellow but the skins will ripen.

Hi AP, I did this with my Kelsaes when I harvested them a few weeks back.

Slowly but surely they are now forming a tanned skin from top to bottom....

I am getting ready to photograph them for VVS!!!!!!!!

Next year I will be doing far less chillies and more kelsaes.

My own big onions have been an absolute disaster this year so I'm glad my "pupils" have done well. I've been afflicted by botrytis and on hindsight, since I was growing on new ground this year - tunnel moved and set up on new plot- I should maybe have given the soil a drenching with a solution of j*e*y*e*s fluid and water before planting. hard lesson, but there's always next year

I made the mistake of trying shallots this year and this proved an absolute waste of time and space so its back to sowing seeds on boxing day, so much better results and I will try them in the new raised beds...
