I grow nantes frubund a lot. I grow them in large pots or troughs, under veggiemesh and they are certainly successful when sown between March and August. The overwintered plants have sometimes worked and sometimes not - I've had trouble with caterpillars eating the foliage before I used the veggiemesh. Last winter the trough I was using got flooded, so that was not a good test. I think if you are happy to get a few small carrots earlier than you would otherwise get, they are worth a try. If you are looking for a good crop of large carrots then probably not.

I should perhaps add that the main reason I have continued to use them is that they taste great.

Try spinach, pre-germinate now and get them in the ground as soon as they are a few inches tall. They grow quick and should give you a crop in a month or two. They won't over-winter though.

Thanks everyone for the help, I've dug it all over and riddled the lot this evening so it's ready for some of the mentioned suggestions, trial and error- trial and error I think!
