I have grown a few different tomatoes this year in my greenhouse but one of them is a mystery. The varieties that I grew from seed (bought seed) are Sungold, Gardeners Delight, Black Cherry, Ruby and Red Alert. Now 2 of the plants have produced normal sized orange tomatoes. One of these is labelled black cherry which I really love. I have never bought any seeds of a large orange tomato and I never saved any seeds from my tomatoes. I was thinking that this is unusual but not too bad as I love tomatoes. I was going to save seed from them as I was thinking Sungold but larger - that is until I tasted them. Think of the tasteless tomatoes you get in supermarkets in winter. Mealy texture and absolutely no flavour at all. Yuck! I do have one black cherry tomato plant that has the correct fruits on it.

If both were labelled Black Cherry, it might have been a wrongly filled pack of seeds were used. Could they have come from the sowing compost you used?

I do have 1 plant of proper Black Cherry from the same packet though as I usually sow 3 to 5 seeds of each variety. Compost was MPC bought from B&Q. I just can't for the life of me think where they have come from. Must have come from the packet and had a few rogue seeds in there. As I said, I have never bought any orange fruited tomatoes other than SungoldLast edited by joyceybabe; 05-09-2014, 02:32 PM.

Yes a mystery and you may never know. I'd save seeds from your real Black cherry and then at least you should have the real deal from them next year.
I know I had quite a lot of weed seeds germinating in B&Q compost this year (though no tomatoes) I have had stray toms pop up sometimes, but I think in my case this is from either reusing compost or mixing in some compost from my heap.
ps Shame they were shop bought tastingLast edited by poly; 05-09-2014, 01:48 PM.

This seems to be quite common for tomato seeds, from this forum and also from personal experience. Having sown a full packet of Red Alert we have 2 out of about 20 that are producing a lovely crop of large plum tomatoes. Hopefully they won't be woolly (possibly a cross?) but for me it all adds to the excitement
