When Is Enough Enough?

I shouldn't complain really as I've had a good crop of Tomatoes but I'm getting tired of looking at the mountain of green Toms still to come. What determines when you strip your plants of any green Toms & what is your favourite method for ripening them, assuming they will still ripen.

I had to strip mine before I lost them all to blight, I ripen on my window sills much to the annoyance if my westie dog or I've made green tomato chutney.

I've had to do the same with my outdoor ones Bex, they are hung up either ripening or going bad........

if you still got any green in the near future,pull up the plant,leave the toms on,most of them should ripen inside,or hang upside down in the shed or attic,i presume your tree nest has some head room,just keep frost free,i do believe this has been on here before,the fellow from Italy rings a bell.................. ding.......dong

Lottie, you''re thinking of Sarico who grew a special type of Italian tomato that would be hung up through winter to ripen.

I just keep my plants growing in the greenhouse till a sharp frost is likely then I snip off the trusses and bring them indoors. I normally have fresh toms well into November.

Am toying around with nipping all the tops & removing any flowers from the plants to encourage ripening.

Was watching Monty today, and he said to take off all the leaves so the toms put all their energy into ripening. I took off all the flowers and any trusses that were too little last week. Will strip the leaves tomorrow and see what happens

Do you know Bal, I was saying exactly the same thing about 10 mins ago. I recalled my lottie neighbour (who had his plot for 35 years) used to do exactly the same thing & I was going to experiment with a plant tomorrow.

Up to yet I removed the leaves from below the first truss then the rest of the leaves have been cut in half, not sure what it achieves but I do the same thing every year.

I've removed the lower leaves Bren but it's starting to get a little late in the day & I still have boatloads of unripened Toms.
