Hmmm where do I start. As I'm down to one half plot think I will get my act together this time, well have no excuses as both of them are at school, and get prepped ready for start of season.
This year has been pretty poor apart from my pumpkin that seems to of appeared by magic.
Think next year it is going to be tomatoes again, but not as many as this year.
Sweetcorn giving it a bash again. It seemed to be going ok but then gave up the ghost. But not deterred for next year.
Runner beans and broad beans were hit and miss. Use to start them off in loo rolls but theses all failed. So started some off in a couple of pots and these did better. So just going to do a pot way next year. Have got 2 different types next year to try.
Radish did ok. But carrots and beetroots were very miss, well missing as they never grew.
Going to try onions from seed. Keep ending up with onion seeds, usually from magazines, so hey why not.
Possibly try chillies and peppers this year. Try something I've never tried before.
Spuds going to keep them simple. Going to do a first early, second and a main. Hope to do a good jacket spud this year.
Going to try cabbage and cauliflower again. Will see how they go again. Well cant be as bad as this year.
      Think that's about it.

Endeavour to stick to plans made over the winter months!

As a one off, the National Vegetable Society had a class for 5 globe beet in the Schedule for its NAtional Championships at Dorchester. Now I normally grow exceptionally good globe beet and knocked up a raised bed so that I could punch some holes to fill with compost so that the beet would develop really nice tap roots. Objective achieved and the beet has really nice tap roots. However although the beet are really nice shaped and in nice condition, virtually all of them have a canker like weal at ground level. Result, I couldn't get an entry for that class. Gutted as it may be years before that vegetable is included in the Schedule again.

I only took over the plot last year and this is the first time I've grown beetroot. I think the bed will need to be sterilised with a solution of Domestos or the like before I try growing beet for show there again so that's my number one task for next year. I'll also be investing in slug nematodes.

What will I do differently next year?
Start things off earlier. I was very late this year and have only just started picking the runner beans.
Give the tomatoes more space and keep on top of the de-shooting. My greenhouse is a jungle of tomato greenery and have to fight my way through to get to the tomatoes.
Only grow veg that we like to eat. Lots of Pak Choy going to seed because there are too many other things to eat.
No radishes - I am the only one to eat them but they also have gone to seed. Same with rocket. All gone to seed.
I never have any success with pumpkins. I have 3 plants of Hooligan and only 1 of them has any fruit on it and they are about the size of a small tomato at the moment despite having loads of feed and water.
Love potatoes so will grow more especially Pink Fir Apple
Love peas too but none ever get to the table. I eat them as I am doing my daily wanderings!
Mice or voles eat the beetroot so don't know what to do about that. Lost our old cat this year and this is the first year that we have had something nibbling at the beetroot and any carrots that are slightly above soil level.

More potatoes next year, probably less tomatoes. No peas, hardly any got to the plate, all eaten in situ by us. More sweetcorn, no pumpkins. Going to try PSB again and fight the butterflies

Downsize, I've decided to put all of my energy into the garden for next year, as opposed to a bit in the garden and a bit on the allotment.

Thats weird why would I be in the garden but on the allotment? I'd never turn the phrase the other way around, on the garden and in the allotment. Unless I wanted a mud bath I guess?

Yes, the plot will be no more by the end of the year, a 3 hours round trip back and fore to work has put a stop to it. There simply aren't enough hours in the day to achieve everything.

                    Hay ho.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

I'm only going to grow what I eat and not get carried away watering things for the sake of it!

That's what I do, no point in growing anything you don't like

Never again will I bother growing carrots. We have cold, heavy clay soil here and a huge problem with voles and rabbits. I was just just curious to try....
I'm going to try growing oca next year. I saw it on a forum somewhere and it looked pretty interesting and quite easy to grow. I'll report back in just over a year's time.

I am going to stop playing "Catch Up" and try and get organised in advance. The only problem is I have a feeling I said the same thing last year - and the year before.

Less potatoes - grew WAY too many this year (over 100 plants)

Will only grow one variety of pea next year - the tall Alderman. The dwarf peas I grew this year were quite a waste of space.

Going to start my autumn-sown garlic in modules rather than in the ground, then plant out in spring

Not going to bother growing tomatoes on the allotment - will just grow a few at home, where I can take better care of them

Still debating whether to bother with summer purple sprouting broccoli next year. It does taste lovely, but so prone to bolting.

I want my allotment to look prettier next year, it all got a bit out of control this year. Definitely more flowers - last month I sowed 10 packs of hardy annuals in drills, so will transplant them all over the plot next spring.
