  • My husband shouldn't be allowed in the garden...

Every time he sets foot in the garden (which isn't often) he causes havoc. Don't get me wrong, he is useful at certain times of year. He digs over the beds in spring and sows, then hand weeds his babies (the carrots cos they are the only vegetable he loves). But he usually hoes out something that I had sown a couple of weeks ago thinking he is being useful. Too many times to count.
Well he had a day off today and while I was in the kitchen, he and 2 year old grandson were pulling up the broccoli that was finished. Good job I thought. Ellis (grandson) came in and said "Granda let me pull up all the lettuce". The lettuce in question was my bolting Chartwell which I was going to harvest the seed from. Our favourite lettuce.
Well, you can just buy more seed he said. True I suppose but I was looking forward to trying to harvest seed as it is something new for me to try.
Can't stay mad at him for long though!

Oh dear! Common problem it seems. My husband almost never comes down to the actual plot but he's adept at destroying seedlings in the back yard. My first pumpkin seedlings were decapitated by his errant fishing waders and my first batch of kohl rabi were trod upon after a few too many drinks. The blinking cat ate my second sowing. The cherry tree I was growing from seed disappeared...I found out later he thought it was a stick and used it to stir some paint with (?????). Really?

Ah but I forgot to mention...he brought home four wild trout from the mountains yesterday. Almost makes up for it.

My lovely Hubby only gets involved in garden duties if he wants something. Even then, it's only if he can use a power tool; chainsaw, chipper, ride-on mower. The latter of which is now dead, thanks to him.

The last time he took it upon himself to do 'something helpful' he weeded out all my hedging plant seedlings from my 'nursery' bed.

          Bless...

Yeah, I know the problem. While I was abroad for a couple of weeks this summer my OH did his best to keep the greenhouse & allotment watered and happy. I then spent a good month carefully nursing everything back to health after his well-intended, ahem, attentions...

I seem to be a member of this club too. My grapevine cuttings disappeared in a weeding frenzy (sticks!?). Half my parsnip babies were weeded too and if I want to stop him marching all over my baby onion sets I have to use tall canes and tape (imagine a crime scene) to ensure he spots them. He is banned from the greenhouses (bull in a china shop)

Mind you it's not just men. It seems to run in his family. One April I left my seedlings in the "tender" care of his sister while we went on holiday and returned to a massacre.

My other half has to be supervised at all times when in the tunnels ( and that's just to have a look at how much thing have grown ). But he is useful for picking the runner beans I can't reach.

Oh, it's not just me then. I did feel a bit mean complaining about him and he thinks he is helping. DIY is his thing. He builds things for the garden. Constructs netting supports with alkathene hoops, builds extra staging in spring for all my seedlings. built a small shed just outside the greenhouse door to store all my many plant pots and seed trays. Just don't do anything in the veg patch without checking with me first!

My husband used to say that I shouldn't be allowed in his workshop!!
He didn't know a dandelion from a buttercup but was great with the chainsaw, mower, hedgetrimmer and building things out of scrap.

Different problem here ... Mrs K doesn't spend as much time helping me in the garden as I would like, so I bought her this for her birthday

My (ex) OH was great for anything destructive, but his idea of weeding was to cut everything in reach off at ground level. I also had to make sure that any job I gave him to do was well away from anything that would object to being trodden on. He was good at starting the petrol lawn mower though, which is something that I never managed to do once in 8 years!

I suppose I should be counted in - my dear hubby has been banned from the veg patch. His job is if it can be made from pallets - it is his job.
Chicken coops, seed table, garden gates - I can not fault him!
