I have now harvested all my first/second early and heritage potatoes , leaving me with a 1/2 acre plot free. Once I clear off the haulms and weeds I am planting soft fruit bushes and perennial veg in part leaving about 1/4 acre remaining. My intention is to plant overwintering green manure, a first for me. Any recommendations would be gratefully received

I chop and change which ones I use. Winter tares are good mixed with Hungarian Grazing Rye. Some people say the Rye grass is hard to dig in but I've never struggled and I'm not that butch!! Greenmanure.co.uk do a winter green manure mix, which might be worth a go and see what goes well, but if you have got 1/4 acre to cover i.e. 1000 square metres I reckon it is going you cost you over £40.

Moles Seeds have a Winter Mix (2 types of Clover + Mustard) which is £46 for 5kg (and you'd need about 3kg for 1,000 sq.m.) [but they have sold out ]

They do have Winter Tares - you'd need about 5kg which would be £11 (and is in stock)

Dunno how their prices compare, but they tend to be competitive when I need reasonable "bulk" of something.K's Garden blog the story of the creation of our garden
