  • Addition to allotment.

Hi, I have just aquired an extra piece of land to my allotment it has not been dug over for a long time, I have managed to rough dig & it was like digging into concrete, I did not see one worm. I am hoping frost etc will work its magic so I can rotavate it next spring. I do have spare farmyard manure which I could spread now, but wonder if it would be better to leave uncovered , to give the frost more chance to do its work. What do you think? Many thanks.

I'd manure now , preferably over card board to suppress the weeds . The worms will start rotavating for you and it will have softened up and be much easier to work in the spring

Layer of wet cardboard or newspaper and as much muck as you can pile on.

Frost may break down clods a bit, but it won't improve the structure as much as mulching will. As the others have said, cover it all in wet newspapers or cardboard, weighed down with muck/rocks/bags of autumn leaves etc.

Soak the ground first if you're able to, or do the mulching after rain, so the moisture doesn't evaporate. In spring you will be pleasantly surprised at how workable the soil is, and with no digging

Why are you all suggesting muck on top of cardboard ?
          Why not underneath ?
The OP has stated he didn't see any worms when digging.

Stop cardboard blowing away would be my guess

The worms will return when they have some organic matter to drag into the soil. Lacking cardboard, just put muck or green mulch on the soil.
