Hi, I have just aquired an extra piece of land to my allotment it has not been dug over for a long time, I have managed to rough dig & it was like digging into concrete, I did not see one worm. I am hoping frost etc will work its magic so I can rotavate it next spring. I do have spare farmyard manure which I could spread now, but wonder if it would be better to leave uncovered , to give the frost more chance to do its work. What do you think? Many thanks.

I'd manure now , preferably over card board to suppress the weeds . The worms will start rotavating for you and it will have softened up and be much easier to work in the spring

Soak the ground first if you're able to, or do the mulching after rain, so the moisture doesn't evaporate. In spring you will be pleasantly surprised at how workable the soil is, and with no diggingAll gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.
