How to store potatoes

It will soon be time for my first ever potato harvest

What's the best way of storing them to stop them going icky and growing stuff?

New potatoes don't need storing, newgardengirl. They are sweetest straight out of the ground and they'll keep in there safely for a few weeks (certainly until you run out of them!) The ones which need storing are maincrop spuds which wouldn't be ready yet anyway.

They're growing in a container though - presumably I'd have to harvest the whole thing at once?

I stored my maincrops in paper sacks last year quite successfully!

This year I am going to leave em in the ground and lift them as I need them or until I need the ground. If I can do this up til Christmas, I then intend lifting the remainder and storing them traditionally in a clamp!

I was quite surprised when I took over my allotment in January that during my digging I was lifting clean potatoes that had been left in by the previous occupant. No keel slug damage to note, so hopefully I'll get away with it!

I was quite surprised when I took over my allotment in January that during my digging I was lifting clean potatoes that had been left in by the previous occupant.

I found four potatoes when I dug up the vegetable patch in my back garden. Apparently it was last cultivated about four or five years ago! The potatoes didn't look very edible but they were still there!
