Autumn onion sets already shooting up!

Hi all
My onion sets I planted two weeks ago are already shooting up several inches above ground.
Is this normal (I presume because its warm) and will they still survive ok through the winter??
Sorry first time planting autumn sets.

Not even bought mine yet but usually only plant out in October when it's slightly cooler so they don't have too much soft growth on them when it gets properly cold. Also the bed I'm putting them and the garlic in is currently in use so I have some caulis to eat first

Many of mine are up too - but they're in seed trays outdoors. Not sure yet when I'll plant them out.

Still have not done mine, except for sowing the Hi- Ball seed...

I usually plant mine out in october and want the onions to establish a good root system more so than top growth. They then romp away in the springtime. In reply to your question, it all depends on what winter we get! To give them more protection, mulch them.

Just planted mine today, along with some of my garlic. I haven't done Autumn planting of onions before, and knew it was a teeny bit early but couldn't help myself! Fingers crossed.

I put a couple rows of snowball sets in today, just came on here looking for a good mulch for them over winter and read its prob a bit early to be planting out, oh well, I have a few more rows worth to go in next month, will see how they compare.

Anyways, what should I mulch them with, really need to keep the weeds down this time now its all been dug over, I was considering using a few bales of straw as I get that free.

Give the bales a go. Only problem I can see is, wind blowing it away.
