2 new 8 x 4ft beds in garden

I have a small allotment to grow all the big stuff like spuds and room for the cages for cabbages etc.

I've just dug over a piece of rough lawn, at home - and made 2 raised beds

Just wondering which veg would you grow in the shelter of a sunny garden, rather than on the allotment?

You could try cucumbers next year?
I'd also go for lettuce- good for impulse picking plus the added bonus of being able to keep an eye out better for slugs?
Growing at home also means you can grow a bit longer in the season as you can easily chuck a fleece over them and remove it without having to hike over to the lottie!

That would be good for stuff that crops frequently & for cut 'n come again crops.
How about a teepee of runners at the end of one & a courgette at the end of the other,then do salad crops by the square foot method in the remainder.

Maybe a few squares of edible flowers/cutting flowers to give colour & interest

For me things that are good close to the house are salad crops, a few strawbs, herbs and peas (tall or climbing varieties to get more from a small space) peas rarely get to the kitchen.

Use them as square ft planting that way you'll have a bit of everything.

If they are next to each other, could you use something to make an arch (or use a cheap arch) for things to climb over? My cukes are now over 6ft high and still going on the plot and it means the rest of the bed is uncluttered by the vines.

I'd use them for a few tomatoes myself. The ones on the plot always get blight but the tomatoes do taste better grown outdoors.

Or things that I don't want to go to the plot for in deepest winter, like parsnips and leeks. But I am a bit lazy....

I'd grow things that I like to pick and use straight away, which means peas, soft fruit and leafy greens. Agree also with the idea of having winter veg near the house.

One always needs more seeds
I'd grow things you need to pick frequently, that don't stand still for a week. Salad leaves, spinach, beans and peas, courgettes, herbs..................you may need another raised bed
