First ever vegetable patch (photos included)

So I decided to dig out my first ever vegetable patch in my garden today despite the bad weather. It's 7ft x 4ft at the minute but I'm going to increase the size but keep it accessible with a path in the middle and sides.

As my soil is very much clay based I'll be adding composte and manure to help improve it. Just need to try and break it down more and remove the large stones from the ground.

I'll be doing a bit of a trial run with some broad beans, garlic and onions over winter but I'll be keeping most of it free for the spring next year.

New to gardening so it's a learning curve but I'm enjoying it. Progression pics will be added.

Ps I'll be flagging the inside Thursday for frost protection. The grass will be covered inside the greenhouse.

Looks like a lovely little spot Lamboluke - you are lucky! You could also try planting some giant garlic now too

Welcome to the vine, just planted my garlic tonight before darkness came in.

164 cloves now in the ground here,s hoping for a bumper crop next year

Start slow and get your soil right it will make a huge difference

What have you done with the turf you have lifted?.............Stack it upside down in a corner & you'll have lovely compost for next year.

That's what I like to hear a true grower in the making, not a fair weather gardener
Just don't get carried away(even with best intentions) and make too much work for yourself to early on as that is when people tend to get down hearted and give up.

Well done Lambo - the first cut is always the hardest.
This time next year, there'll be very little grass left and you'll have veggie beds everywhere. If I'm wrong, I'll eat another courgette

It's beeb placed to one side for a bit of patch work in the front garden. I'll be sure to use this tip for any bed expansion I do though cheers

Haha I saw the forecast and thought to heck with it. Neighbours raised a few eye brows mind you. Yeah I won't get too ahead of myself. I just want to get the bed/s prepped for next year and try and grow something over the winter for an early harvest to wet my appetite.

Best things is the other half said "bit small isn't it...why don't you do another one" so I can't complain and the more the merrier

Even though you plan to grow crops over winter, they won't be ready till next spring/early summer so don't get too disappointed if they are not ready any earlier.

Compost and manure added to break down the hellish clay soil I have.



The vegetables are in. I have broad beans, 2 variety of onions, elephant garlic and another species of over winter garlic.



A pano of the back garden. Managed to get some free flags to start putting in the greenhouse, ran out sadly. Just a few more to get that sorted.

Get that bed extended Luke. You've got room at both the fence & wall side to gain a couple more feet.

I didn't want to go too far to the right towards the fence as the fence casts a shadow so I thought light might be an issue. I didn't go any further back because a) I thought it best to have access all the way around and b) the footing from the wall would cause me issues for depth at the right side as for some reason It comes out about 6" from the wall.

I guess In the summer I could expand this downward
