When do you harvest Sweet Potatoes cos mine in the kite think they are runner beans & are climbing all over & still very healthy looking.

Grew them once out of curiosity and decided it wasn't worth it. I think that I harvested them about now. Have a rummage round the base of the plants and see what size they are.Gardening requires a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration. Lou Erickson, critic and poetComment

I've never grown them but if the foliage is still good I'd be tempted to fleece them and keep them going for as long as possible.Comment

I grew a few in a pot last year with good results, I didn't harvest until late november. I have a large bed of them in a polytunnel this year trained up strings and I don't plan to dig them up for at least a month yetComment

Harvesting sweet potatoes
In late summer, approximately 12 to 16 weeks after planting them, you will notice that the foliage and stems begin to turn yellow and die back. Now is the time to start harvesting your sweet potatoes, although they can be left in the ground longer if you prefer larger tubers. Make sure that you lift them before the first frosts though, to avoid the tubers being damaged by the cold.
