Asparagus

I tried growing seeds and crowns before but ended up moving house etc and never had any of my own and i think it is my favourite veg.

In my local garden centre they sell asparagus plants, i have bought 22 and will keep adding but i cannot find any info about asparagus plants on the net only seeds and crowns.

Has anyone got any experience with them, e.g the spacing between them, have i got a head start with the picking process?

I would plant em as 1 year crowns, surely that's were there'll be once matured!

1 foot apart , 18 inch between rows!

The key thing with asparagus is to prepare the bed really well and make sure you have dug out every scrap of perennial weeds. Beyond that, apply a top mulch around the plants as they grow and keep an eye out for asparagus beetle, little red things which lay eggs which turn into tiny grubs, rather like lily beetles do.

Our purple asparagus from seed was harvestable in the third year after sowing, and you only gain a year with expensive crowns. The only problem with seedling plants is you may lose some in the first year, but if you plant them at a closer spacing you can always eliminate the ones you don't need.

Keep feeding the beds with well rotted manure as a surface mulch each year as they get into growth, and cut back the foliage in late autumn.

Out of curiosity what variety have you bought as you are in Spain.
